Quick Start Guide
Everything you need to start logging and organising your life events.
1. What is LifeLOG?
LifeLOG is a personal event journal. You create folders to organise your memories, then add events inside those folders — each event captures what happened, when, where, and any attached files or notes. Your data stays private unless you choose to share a folder with someone else.
2. Creating your first folder
Folders are the top-level containers for your events. Think of them as albums or projects.
- Open Folders from the navigation bar.
- Click the Create top folder button.
- Enter a name (e.g. Holidays 2025) and click Create.
3. Adding events
An event records something that happened — a photo, a note, a location, or just a timestamp. Events are added through the LifeLOG mobile app on your iPhone or Android phone, which captures GPS location, date and time automatically.
Adding an event via the app
- Open the LifeLOG app and sign in.
- Select the folder you want to log to.
- Tap the + button to create a new event — the app fills in the date, time, and location automatically.
- Add a description, attach a photo, video, or audio, and tap Save.
4. Browsing events in a folder
Click any folder name in the Folders list to open its event list. Events are shown newest-first.
- Events uploaded together from the app are grouped into a batch, shown under a collapsible batch header with the upload date and event count.
- Click any event row to expand its full details — description, date, location, note, and any attached photo, video, or audio.
- The button in the toolbar (and on each batch) opens a map showing all located events in that folder or batch.
5. Browsing events in history
The History view (navbar) shows a chronological timeline of all your events across all folders for a selected date range.
- Use the date range picker at the top to choose a from/to period.
- Events are grouped by day and sorted newest-first within each day.
- Click an event to view its full details, including any attached file or note.
- Click the button to plot the entire date range on a map.
6. Browsing events on map
Any event recorded with a GPS location can be plotted on an interactive Google Map. The map icon appears in the folder event list toolbar, on each batch header, and in the History toolbar.
- Each event type has its own coloured pin — photos, videos, audio, notes, and positions each look different.
- Nearby events are automatically clustered into a numbered circle; zoom in to expand them.
- Click any pin to open an info window with the event title, date, and a media preview.
- Use the map-type selector (top-right corner) to switch between Road, Terrain, Hybrid, and Satellite views.
- The map automatically zooms and pans to fit all events when it loads.
7. Organising your folders
Use the ⋮ context menu on any folder row to access organisational actions:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Edit folder… | Rename the folder. |
| Move… | Move the folder under a different parent (or to the top level). |
| Create subfolder… | Add a nested child folder inside this one. |
| Share with… | Give another LifeLOG user read access to this folder. |
| Add to favorites… / Remove from favorites | Toggle the folder as a favorite — see Favorites. |
| Download events | Export all events in this folder as a ZIP archive. |
| Delete folder… | Permanently delete an empty folder (only shown when safe to delete). |
8. Favorite folders
Mark frequently used folders as favorites to keep them at the top of your folder list and folder picker dropdowns.
- Open the ⋮ menu on any folder.
- Click Add to favorites… — the folder immediately moves to the ⭐ Favorites section at the top of the list.
- To remove a folder from favorites, open its ⋮ menu again and click Remove from favorites.
11. Moving a folder
Folders can be reorganised at any time without losing their events or shares.
- Open the ⋮ menu on the folder you want to move and choose Move…
- Select a destination from the Move into dropdown, or choose Top level (no parent) to make it a root folder.
- Click Move. All subfolders and their paths are automatically updated.
12. Downloading events
You can export all events from a folder as a ZIP archive. This is useful for backups or sharing data outside of LifeLOG.
- Open the ⋮ menu on any folder that contains events.
- Click Download events — the archive downloads immediately.
The ZIP contains a summary text file and individual files for each event (attachments where present, or JSON/text for notes).
13. Changing the language
LifeLOG is written in English, but your browser can translate the entire site into your preferred language instantly — no account settings or extra software needed.
- Right-click anywhere on the page and choose Translate to [your language].
- Or click the translate icon (🌐) that appears in the address bar when Chrome detects a foreign-language page.
- Chrome remembers your choice — you can set it to always translate English.
- Click the translate icon (A→A) in the address bar.
- Or right-click the page and choose Translate to [your language].
- Edge can also be set to always translate specific languages automatically.
Firefox supports translation via the built-in feature (version 118+) or the Firefox Translations add-on. Safari on iOS and macOS offers Translation from the share/tools menu.
