Docs Quick Start Guide

Quick Start Guide

Everything you need to start logging and organising your life events.

1. What is LifeLOG?

LifeLOG is a personal event journal. You create folders to organise your memories, then add events inside those folders — each event captures what happened, when, where, and any attached files or notes. Your data stays private unless you choose to share a folder with someone else.

2. Creating your first folder

Folders are the top-level containers for your events. Think of them as albums or projects.

  1. Open Folders from the navigation bar.
  2. Click the Create top folder button.
  3. Enter a name (e.g. Holidays 2025) and click Create.
You can nest folders inside other folders by using the ⋮ → Create subfolder… context menu on any existing folder.

3. Adding events

An event records something that happened — a photo, a note, a location, or just a timestamp. Events are added through the LifeLOG mobile app on your iPhone or Android phone, which captures GPS location, date and time automatically.

Adding an event via the app

  1. Open the LifeLOG app and sign in.
  2. Select the folder you want to log to.
  3. Tap the + button to create a new event — the app fills in the date, time, and location automatically.
  4. Add a description, attach a photo, video, or audio, and tap Save.

4. Browsing events in a folder

Click any folder name in the Folders list to open its event list. Events are shown newest-first.

  • Events uploaded together from the app are grouped into a batch, shown under a collapsible batch header with the upload date and event count.
  • Click any event row to expand its full details — description, date, location, note, and any attached photo, video, or audio.
  • The button in the toolbar (and on each batch) opens a map showing all located events in that folder or batch.

5. Browsing events in history

The History view (navbar) shows a chronological timeline of all your events across all folders for a selected date range.

  • Use the date range picker at the top to choose a from/to period.
  • Events are grouped by day and sorted newest-first within each day.
  • Click an event to view its full details, including any attached file or note.
  • Click the button to plot the entire date range on a map.

6. Browsing events on map

Any event recorded with a GPS location can be plotted on an interactive Google Map. The map icon appears in the folder event list toolbar, on each batch header, and in the History toolbar.

  • Each event type has its own coloured pin — photos, videos, audio, notes, and positions each look different.
  • Nearby events are automatically clustered into a numbered circle; zoom in to expand them.
  • Click any pin to open an info window with the event title, date, and a media preview.
  • Use the map-type selector (top-right corner) to switch between Road, Terrain, Hybrid, and Satellite views.
  • The map automatically zooms and pans to fit all events when it loads.

7. Organising your folders

Use the ⋮ context menu on any folder row to access organisational actions:

Action What it does
Edit folder…Rename the folder.
Move…Move the folder under a different parent (or to the top level).
Create subfolder…Add a nested child folder inside this one.
Share with…Give another LifeLOG user read access to this folder.
Add to favorites… / Remove from favoritesToggle the folder as a favorite — see Favorites.
Download eventsExport all events in this folder as a ZIP archive.
Delete folder…Permanently delete an empty folder (only shown when safe to delete).

8. Favorite folders

Mark frequently used folders as favorites to keep them at the top of your folder list and folder picker dropdowns.

  1. Open the menu on any folder.
  2. Click Add to favorites… — the folder immediately moves to the ⭐ Favorites section at the top of the list.
  3. To remove a folder from favorites, open its menu again and click Remove from favorites.
Favorites also appear first in the Move… and Move Event destination dropdowns — grouped under ⭐ Favorites for quick selection.

9. Sharing a folder

You can share any folder with other LifeLOG users so they can view the events inside.

  1. Open the menu on the folder you want to share and choose Share with…
  2. Type the email address(es) of the people you want to share with. You can enter multiple addresses separated by commas or semicolons.
  3. The autocomplete dropdown shows people you have shared with before — click a suggestion to add them quickly.
  4. Click Share. The recipients will immediately see the folder in their Shared with me section.
Only users who already have a LifeLOG account can be added as recipients. Sharing with an unknown email will show an error message.

Removing a share

On the Share page, each shared user appears as a chip. Click the × on a chip to revoke access — a confirmation dialog will appear before the share is removed.

10. Sharing a batch

A batch is a group of events uploaded together from the app. You can share a batch as a public link — no LifeLOG account needed to view it. This is useful for sharing a set of photos or a trip with anyone.

  1. Open a folder and find the batch you want to share.
  2. Click the share icon on the batch header.
  3. A shareable link is generated — click Copy link to clipboard and send it to anyone.
Batch share links are valid for 7 days. The recipient can view all events in the batch and open them on a map — no login required.

11. Moving a folder

Folders can be reorganised at any time without losing their events or shares.

  1. Open the menu on the folder you want to move and choose Move…
  2. Select a destination from the Move into dropdown, or choose Top level (no parent) to make it a root folder.
  3. Click Move. All subfolders and their paths are automatically updated.
The destination list only shows valid targets — a folder cannot be moved into itself or into any of its own subfolders.

12. Downloading events

You can export all events from a folder as a ZIP archive. This is useful for backups or sharing data outside of LifeLOG.

  1. Open the menu on any folder that contains events.
  2. Click Download events — the archive downloads immediately.

The ZIP contains a summary text file and individual files for each event (attachments where present, or JSON/text for notes).

13. Changing the language

LifeLOG is written in English, but your browser can translate the entire site into your preferred language instantly — no account settings or extra software needed.

Google Chrome
  • Right-click anywhere on the page and choose Translate to [your language].
  • Or click the translate icon (🌐) that appears in the address bar when Chrome detects a foreign-language page.
  • Chrome remembers your choice — you can set it to always translate English.
Microsoft Edge
  • Click the translate icon (A→A) in the address bar.
  • Or right-click the page and choose Translate to [your language].
  • Edge can also be set to always translate specific languages automatically.
Other browsers

Firefox supports translation via the built-in feature (version 118+) or the Firefox Translations add-on. Safari on iOS and macOS offers Translation from the share/tools menu.
